North of Boston at a Glance
The area between Boston and the
New Hampshire border is filled
with attractions that are beautiful and diverse, providing some of the best that
Massachusetts has to offer.
For a history lesson in the macabre, check out Salem,
just 20 mi (32 km) northeast of Boston. Infamous for its witch trials in the late
1600s, Salem is now home to such attractions as the Museum
of Myths and Monsters, the Witch
Dungeon Museum and several supposedly haunted mansions. Whale watching and
deep-sea fishing prove to be popular activities, especially in Gloucester,
which also boasts a beautiful beach. The seaside communities of Beverly,
Danvers and Rockport
also attract visitors looking for sun and surf in the summer. History enthusiasts
enjoy perusing the exhibits at the American
Textile History Museum in Lowell
and touring The
House of the Seven GablesSalem's oldest mansion. Those looking for outdoor
adventure appreciate Halibut
Point State Park near Rockport, where hiking, picnicking and fishing are popular
pastimes.
