The city of Lowell was the first planned industrial city in the United States. Located in Massachusetts, about 40 minutes northwest of Boston, Lowell was intended to become a textile manufacturing center along the Merrimack River. Today, Lowell is thriving with new businesses due to the technological boom of the 1980s and its proximity to Boston. For a dose of local history, a visit to the American Textile History Museum is a great place to start. The ongoing exhibitions display local history through the art and science of textiles. Another museum of interest is the New England Quilt Museum, which houses a large collection of antique quilts. Local events such as the Lowell Folk Festival attract a large following, with a multitude of folk performers, ethnic food stands and craft displays every July. Lowell owes its rich cultural scene to the many theaters located in town. The Lowell Auditorium is located on the Concord River and is considered the venue for local theatrical and cultural activities. The Merrimack Repertory Theatre produces seven shows per year during their season from September to June.
